Tribunal procedures

Usually employment tribunal claims go straight to the main or 'full merits' hearing - in other words your tribunal case is likely to be heard in half a day if the issues are relatively straightforward. In some cases, before the main hearing, there may be one or more other hearings such as a Directions Hearing, Pre-Hearing Review, Preliminary Hearing and Remedy Referred Hearing.

The purpose of a Directions Hearing is to identify the issues to be considered for the main hearing and are heard by a Chairman. No evidence is given. The Chairman may:
