Work with Children etc - checking records

Employing people in work involving children or vulnerable adults requires a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Disclosure check. The penalties for employing people in these occupations without adequate checks can be severe and include fines and criminal sanctions.

However, people employing a nanny, child-minder, au pair or home help at home are not required to obtain checks.

CRB Disclosure checks can only be obtained by registered bodies – not by individuals or the self-employed. There are, however, legitimate ways in which individuals or unregistered employers can obtain checks on potential or existing employees.
