Checking References It is not a legal requirement to obtain references on a candidate; however, it is an excellent way to obtain information to assist you in deciding whether to extend an offer to a candidate. If you do want to check references, it is important to state in writing that your company policy is to check references and any employment is contingent upon the company receiving satisfactory references. You should also not approach a candidate's current employer unless the candidate has given express permission to do so.
