Parental Leave
Working parents have the right to take up to 13 weeks off work to look after a child, or to make arrangements for the child's welfare, up to the child’s fifth birthday.
The leave is unpaid and generally only employees with one year’s continuous service qualify.
Who qualifies? Parental leave is available to full or part time employees who have, or expect to have, parental responsibility for a child. It does not apply to workers who would not count as employees in the legal sense - see the section on When is a person an employee?.
