Legal obligations


Health and safety law applies to all businesses, to the self-employed and to employees. However, if you employ fewer than five people you do not have to:

  • have a written policy statement describing your systems and procedures for ensuring employees' health and safety
  • record the significant findings of your risk assessments

Companies with five or more more employees must both have a company health and safety policy and record risk assessments.
