Except for certain employers in the financial services sector, an employer is not obliged to give a departing employee a reference.
It is becoming increasingly common for companies only to provide confirmation of the leaver's or former employee's service dates and job title. If a company decides to handle matters in this manner, it should be applied to all employees and this should be stated in the company's policy.
