Dismissal In law, a dismissal can occur where:
the employer terminates the contract - e.g. for misconduct or redundancy
a limited term contract ends and is not renewed
the employee resigns in circumstances where they are entitled to do so because of the employer's actions (known as "constructive dismissal")
An employer may lay employees off without pay for a temporary period (e.g. because of a downturn in orders) if there is a contractual right to do so - i.e. provision is made in the employment contract. This could also possibly entitle employees to a statutory payment known as a guarantee payment.
